Camden Students Tackle Hunger & Homelessness
Rutgers Camden students came together for Hunger Awareness Week to highlight the importance of helping out the local community. During the week, students fundraised over $1,000 for the local food pantry and educated hundreds of students on campus.
NJPIRG worked with campus groups to organize the week of events. Groups that participated in the week included Student Government, Black Student Union, Social Work Association, Campus Ministries, LASO, CAB, Civic Scholars, Greek Life, American Sociological Association, Rutgers Bookmates, College Dems, College Republicans, Business Management Association, Libertarians, Marketing Association, West Indian Association, Asian Culture Club, Rutgers Disability Awareness Coalition, and more.
Groups worked together to organize a clothing drive, Benefit Concert, Bingo Night, volunteer tutoring of local kids, fundraising for Feeding America, and a Tent City educational display.
Among the week's events was the Faces of Homelessness Panel along with the Build Small, Give Big activity. During the event, students built piggy banks out of popsicle sticks and collected donations for the New Visions Day Shelter. On the panel were several speakers from the local community including Chef Jonathan Jernigan from the Camden Cathedral Kitchen, and Kevin Moran, Director of New Visions Day Shelter.
Our Hunger and Homelessness campaign is looking forward to our annual Hunger Cleanup to engage 100 Rutgers Camden students in serving the local community and fundraising over $3,000 for the local food bank.
