Last Saturday the Energy Assessments and Weatherization team from the Energy Service Corps worked on making two homes in the Newark area more energy efficient. It was a learning experience for everyone involved since it was our very first official Energy Assessment.
We had a few obstacles to overcome to actually do the assessments and weatherization. Not everyone knew exactly what we were going to be doing. Those of us who did know what we were doing, only knew in theory, not in practice. The first house was more of an exercise in team work and learning our way with the tools. By the time we got to the second house we were working much more efficiently, and had a better understanding of what we could do and our limitations. Still not perfect, but there was a definite noticeable improvement. Our next assessment that we will be performing this Friday (10/30 11am-2pm) at the Newark Gospel Tabernacle will probably see an even larger improvement from our now experienced crew.
Despite having to figure some stuff as we were doing it, and not being perfect at it, we had a lot of fun, and the residents were appreciative of our work. We managed to work together with no problems. And we got the job done while still being able to fool around and tell jokes. The work wasn't all serious.
The Newark Gospel Tabernacle will be a different experience than the homes we worked on this past Saturday. We are expecting a much larger building and we'll most likely focus more on accomplishing a detailed Energy Assessment rather than doing on-site weatherization.

Anybody who is interested about coming on the 30th or for any of our other future energy assessments should either drop by our office (Robeson 303) and speak to our Energy Service Corps Organizer (Lyndsey), or email myself (Daniel) at DDomin4360@gmail.com or Lyndsey at Lyndsey@njpirgstudents.org.
