New Jersey Community Water Watch was founded in 1994 as a project of
the New Jersey Public Interest Research Group (NJPIRG) and AmeriCorps,
and now has student-run chapters on 10 college campuses across the
state. Since its inception, Water Watch has educated thousands of
people about the importance of water quality issues in New Jersey,
where 75 percent of the waterways have been deemed unfit for fishing or
swimming.
Our mission also involves beach and river cleanups to reduce debris
and raise local awareness; monitoring and watch-dogging local streams
for pollutants; and environmental education ranging from elementary
school programs to forums for college students and community members.
